Grown predominantly in the Northern Hemisphere, pinenuts are considered as nutritious snacks that can be roasted or eaten raw. 100 grams of dry kernels of pinenuts provide 673 calories, phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. (1)Pinenuts & Cancer
Extensive studies are done on pinenuts to elucidate their cancer-fighting properties. Studies have shown that beta-sitosterol found in pinenuts interferes with the cell signalling pathways stimulating apoptosis (natural and controlled death of cells) and inhibiting the cell cycle, proliferation, inflammation and metastasis (spread of cancer cells from one part of the body to another).

According to research beta-sitosterol works effectively against a wide range of cancer including breast, colon, lung, ovarian, prostate and stomach cancer. (2)

As per evidence antioxidant properties present in pinenuts helps in alleviating oxidative stress which is considered a risk factor for cancer. Reactive oxygen species decrease in the bloodstream which protects and restores natural enzymatic oxidants of the body.

  3. In a study, it was concluded that Beta-sitosterol worked as an effective agent to reduce 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) -induced oxidative stress in rats and could therefore be used as a chemopreventive drug. (6)

EAT AS PER YOUR BODY WEIGHT
It is best advised that an individual should have potion control while consuming nuts.  According to the general rule of thumb, pine nuts can be consumed 2 tablespoons in a day. (7)

Storage
Pinenuts should be kept in airtight containers in cool dark spots. It should be consumed quickly or can be stored in the freezer to increase shelf life.  (7)

SIDE EFFECTS (1)
The side effects due to un-recommended consumption of pine nuts include;

  1. Development of anaphylactic response or IgE mediated allergic reaction to pine nuts.
