Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy

Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of bone marrow (soft, sponge-like tissue in the center of most bones) and bone is removed. A small area of skin and the surface of the bone underneath are numbed with an anesthetic. Then a special wide needle is pushed into the bone. A sample of liquid bone marrow is removed with a syringe attached to the needle. The syringe is then removed and the needle is rotated to remove a sample of the bone and the bone marrow. Both the bone marrow and bone samples are sent to a laboratory to be looked at under a microscope.

F.A.Q

A bone marrow aspiration is a procedure to take a sample of the liquid part of your bone marrow. Your bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside of your bones that produces blood cells.they may use aspiration to check if cancer cells have spread to your bones.
Bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy can show whether your bone marrow is healthy and making normal amounts of blood cells. Doctors use these procedures to diagnose and monitor blood and marrow diseases, including some cancers, as well as fevers of unknown origin.
Complications are rare but can include: Excessive bleeding, particularly in people with low numbers of a certain type of blood cell (platelets) Infection, generally of the skin at the site of the exam, especially in people with weakened immune systems. Long-lasting discomfort at the bone marrow exam site.
Tell your doctor about medications and supplements you take. Certain medications and supplements may increase your risk of bleeding after a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Tell your doctor if you’re nervous about your procedure. Discuss your worries about the exam with your doctor.
